Good on ya

Michael Chong decided to quit his cabinet post yesterday because he disagreed with his governments position on recognizing Quebec as a nation. Good for him, while I agree with the conservatives on many issues I think recognizing quebec as a nation is sets the potential wheels in motion for another constitutional roller coaster ride, that I for one really don't want to endure. The fact that Prime Minister Harper has stated that the term nation should be understood symbolically only, just won't wash with most Canadians let alone Quebecers.
Websters defines a "nation" as :1/ a race of people having a common 'descent',language and culture. 2/ a body of people constituting a political unit under one government. Now if those are the popular definitions of the term then any language or cultural or racial group can be a nation under the first definition while all the provinces could effectively become nations under the second. using the term symbolically dilutes it and in my opinion undermines the cohesiveness that Canada was and should be trying to strengthen. For that, Michael Chong gets my tip of the hat and maybe 10 bucks or so seeing as he just got a drop in salary.

I agree. I don't blame harper for introducing it in to the house of commons, I don't know that he had a choice, but I'm glad to see that some members had the balls to speak out against it.
